LEADERSHIP TRAILS

Everybody Up
Scouting

Now that your group members have all counted off, you think that it’s time for you to leave. You’re getting an eerie feeling from this place, more eerie than Area 51 in general. You think you might see swirling lights off the west and whatever that low droning sound is, you don’t want any part of it.

You move around the campsite, pulling your team members to their feet and getting ready to leave. The sooner you’ve accomplished your goals, the better.

Running the game

This game is relatively simple, involving a straightforward physical challenge that gets progressively more difficult.

  • Each pair of scouts sit with the soles of their feet touching.
  • The scouts grasp each other’s hands and lean back.
  • Scouts attempt to simultaneously pull themselves into a standing position, making sure both of them leave the ground and arrive at a standing position at approximately the same time.

Once scouts have accomplished the tasks in pairs, form groups of 3 and reattempt the challenge. Continue increasing the group size until the entire patrol is able to complete the challenge together.

Debrief

The following debrief questions are meant to give you an opportunity to discuss with your patrol mates and reflect on the game. You can have one leader ask the discussion questions or you could take turns asking the questions, making sure everyone’s voice is heard.

This activity requires trust between partners as well as a degree of physical cooperation and coordination.

  • What did you learn about trusting your patrol mates from this exercise?
  • Was there a single leader? A number of leaders? How did they become the leader?
  • Did you make a plan before attempting the challenge? How did you hear everyone’s voices and ideas while making a plan?
